The Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services has been awarded 3-point-1 million dollars for the first year of a two-year grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the prevention and treatment of opioid abuse in Kansas. K-State Research and Extension is also focusing on the opioid crisis and making plans to work directly with communities to fight this growing epidemic. Extension youth development specialist Elaine Johannes and adult development and aging specialist Erin Yelland are researching this public health issue and have discovered that we’re in the middle of a perfect storm in the United States – especially in rural states.

Sound Living is a weekly public affairs program addressing issues related to families and consumers. It is hosted by Jeff Wichman. Each episode shares the expertise of K-State specialists in fields such as child nutrition, food safety, adult development and aging, youth development, family resource management, physical fitness and more.
