According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States. On average, 10 people die every day from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children under the age of 14. As swimming pools open for the summer, K-State Research and Extension child development specialist Bradford Wiles reminds parents and caregivers that children require constant supervision and that getting distracted – even for a few seconds – can have tragic consequences.

Sound Living is a weekly public affairs program addressing issues related to families and consumers. It is hosted by Jeff Wichman. Each episode shares the expertise of K-State specialists in fields such as child nutrition, food safety, adult development and aging, youth development, family resource management, physical fitness and more.
